Cuban Cohiba was founded in 1966 as a restricted production private brand that was only available to Fidel Castro and high-ranking officials in the Communist Party of Cuba and the Cuban government. The Cohiba brand, which was frequently offered as diplomatic gifts, gradually gained "cult" status. It was first publicly available for sale to the general public in 1982.
